PROGRAM INFORMATION: In the fall, The Woodlawn Cemetery & Conservancy and The Door – A Center of Alternatives will invite 30 young adults to explore a career in landscape restoration. Interns selected for the Landscape Restoration Program will receive 10 weeks of hands-on training, learning how to create and care for different landscapes and about career opportunities in the green industry.
The mission of the program is to prepare participants for entry-level positions in the landscaping and horticulture sectors. Program participants learn how to work as a team, follow instructions, and the importance of timeliness and reliability. This pilot training is graciously supported by the World Monuments Fund and the NYC Department of Youth & Community Development Advance & Earn program. Curriculum: Through hands-on classes at the Woodlawn Cemetery under the supervision of expert instructors at the Davey Institute, Interns will learn the following:
• String trimming, mowing, leaf and grass blowing
• Landscape bed maintenance / mulching / edging • Shrub and small tree pruning • Shrub, perennial and small tree planting Schedule: Program enrollment will begin at The Door the week of August 31st Paid hands-on training at Woodlawn runs Tuesday September 8th to Friday November 13th . Training hours will be Monday to Friday between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Interns are paid $15/hour for up to 25 hours per week. Interns will be assigned to teams with staggered shifts and some portions of the curriculum will be presented virtually as needed, according to public health guidelines and social distancing standards. Woodlawn and Davey will provide optional paid continuing education classes in the winter. Certifications:
• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety and Health User • CPR/First Aid Davey instructors will provide support for National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) certifications to be taken after graduation.
Support Services: The Door, an agency dedicated to empowering New York City youth, will assist Interns with:
• Computer Literacy and Technology Access • Resume Preparation and Job Interviews with Industry Employers 3 • Financial Literacy and Support • One-on-One Counseling • Life Skills Workshops • Social Services Referrals Employment Opportunities:

The Door team will work with all graduates to find career opportunities in line with their goals. Application Requirements:
• 18-24 years of age in September 2020
• Reside in the 5 boroughs of New York City
• Legally able to work in the United States
• Have high school diploma or GED/HSE
• Not currently working or in school
