THE PARSONS SCHOLARS PROGRAM CENTERS PEOPLE OF COLOR IN THE EXPLORATION OF ART AND DESIGN WITHIN A COLLEGE ENVIRONMENT.

The Parsons Scholars Program is a 3 year college and career access program that centers people of color in the exploration of art and design as a tool for self expression, self discovery and social justice. In order to gain admittance into the program, students must meet the HEOP standards and demonstrate a deep commitment to exploring art and design college and career options on Saturdays and summers, which comes at no cost to them.

During their 10th through 12th grade in high school, students take pre-college classes at Parsons and are eligible for 6 transferable college credits upon completion of the program. Scholars participate in workshops, field trips and special projects that expose them to a wide array of artists, designers, and creative practitioners and prepare them for their next steps. Scholars have the opportunity to explore their identities as artists through an intergenerational community of support that includes peers, college mentors, youth advocates, faculty, artists and staff.

Building on the legacy of artists and designers of color, the program seeks to expand access to young people that have been historically excluded from institutions such as higher education. We seek to cultivate an ecosystem of racial equity where it is equally as important for us to prepare our students for a rigorous college education in the arts as it is to address the obstacles that often stand in the way of our students’ educational and professional success.
