Science Researcher Internship 11th graders


2019 STEM Research Academy

The STEM Research Academy is a two-semester program which will allow 25 high school students to take a spring pre-college science course to introduce them to the expectations of working in a research lab environment. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to participate in a six week paid summer research experience with a Baruch College faculty member.

Program Details:

· Spring 2019: Introduction to Research / DNA Detectives Course: (End of January to May / Wed & Fri / 4:30pm-6:00pm). The objective of this course is to learn about the nature of DNA and genetic variation, deepen students’ appreciation of biodiversity by providing opportunities for the students to develop, and practice sterile lab techniques, good record keeping habits, and proper measurement skills.

· Summer 2019: Research Internship: (July to August / Mon through Thurs / approximately 9:30 am – 4:00 pm). A six week paid structured laboratory internship where students will be matched with a Baruch College faculty member and lab team.

Eligibility:

  • Be a current NYC public high school 11th grader

  • Overall H.S. average of 80+

  • 75 or above on the English Language Arts (ELA) Regents or 480+ on SAT Verbal/Critical Reading or 50 on PSAT Verbal/Critical Reading

  • 80+ on any Math Regents Exam AND 75+ on the Living Environment Regents Exam

  • **10th graders with an overall 80+ (overall average, English average, Math average, and Science average) will be considered**

Spring 2019 College Credit Courses:

Current 11th and 12th graders at your respective high school can apply to enroll in one of the following college credit bearing courses for FREE:

  • Business Fundamentals (3 Credits) – Mon & Wed 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Psychology (3 credits) – Tues & Thurs 4:10pm-5:30pm OR Online Hybrid (will meet Wednesdays in person; 4:10pm-5:30pm)

  • Abnormal Psychology (3 credits) – Tues & Thurs 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Journalistic Writing – (4 credits) - Mon & Wed 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Sociology (3 credits) – Mon & Wed 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Cultural Anthropology (3 credits) – Tues & Thurs 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Speech Communications (3 credits) – Mon & Wed 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Personal Finance (3 credits) – Tues & Thurs 4:10pm-5:30pm

  • Writing I (3 credits) – Tues & Thurs 4:10pm-5:50pm

  • Critical Health Issues (3 credits) – Online Hybrid (will meet Mondays in person; 4:10pm-5:30pm)

Program Details:

  • All courses will take place afterschool at Baruch College from January 28th – May 22nd

Eligibility:

· Students must be a current NYC public high school 11th or 12th grader

· Have the following test scores: PSAT/SAT Verbal (Min. 480) OR English Language Arts Regents (Min. 75), OR ACT English Score (Min. 20)

· Students who use PSAT scores to qualify for admission into the program, must have an overall GPA of 85

Note: Acceptance into the College Now program at Baruch College is contingent on students meeting the program criteria as well as space availability in our courses.
