Teen Activist Project (TAP), a paid internship program focused on social justice, activism, and the

Dear Youth Workers and Supporters,

As the 2018-19 school year begins, the New York Civil Liberties Union is once again seeking teens to join the Teen Activist Project (TAP), a paid internship program focused on social justice, activism, and the law.

Please share this flyer with students, teachers, and guidance counselors in your schools and networks! Students can now apply online at www.nyclu.org/tap.

TAP brings together teens from all over the NYC area to discuss civil liberties issues, such as students’ rights, confidential health care rights for minors, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech – and more.

TAP members meet weekly to discuss social justice issues and get hands-on training in peer education and community organizing. The program offers students the opportunity to learn about civil rights issues impacting their communities, develop youth led advocacy campaigns, work with professionals on civil liberties issues, and much more.

In previous years, TAP has advocated for the passage of police accountability laws, created a video on LGBTQ student rights, and surveyed their peers about bullying in schools. These projects can be found at www.nyclu.org/tap.

TAP members can receive up to $600 in scholarship money or community service hours. The program is ideal for youth interested in health care, law, social justice, and community organizing.

To qualify to participate, teens must be 14 to 21 years old and in a New York City high school or a GED program. Our required meetings are held at NYCLU’s offices at 125 Broad Street in Manhattan and take place at least once a week (exact day TBD) from 4:15-6:15pm. We also ask that TAP members be available to meet after school at least one other day of the week. Youth who join are expected to remain in the program for the length of the school year.

Applications are due online by Friday, September 28th. Late applications may be disqualified. Interviews will be held in early to mid-October after the application deadline to invite selected applicants to learn about the NYCLU, the TAP program and meet our current TAP members.

Thanks for your support and please contact me with any questions.

Best,

Jake
